A Coilbox is an essential component used in hot-rolling mills to optimize the rolling process. It is a mechanical device that temporarily stores and cools hot-rolled steel coils during the rolling process. The primary function of the Coilbox is to improve the efficiency and quality of the hot-rolling operation by managing the transfer and temperature of the steel coils.
The distance between the beam furnace’s centerline at the start of the rolling mill and the reel where the finished steel coils are rolled up is only 311 meters, achieved using a Coilbox. This innovation reduces the required space for the machine by 60 meters.

2. The Importance of Friction Springs in the Coilbox
A retaining roll is installed on the driver unit to manage the unwinding coil, pressing it against the retaining roller. Two dampers on either side of the driver unit slow down the coil. These dampers are essential to absorb the energy generated during operation, protecting the system from damage and ensuring reliability under harsh conditions. The system operates continuously, stopping only for maintenance.

As part of a project to redesign the coilbox, the damping concept was revised. The previous solution, which included a helical compression spring, was replaced with buffers utilizing RINGFEDER® Friction Springs. These springs are designed to absorb a maximum energy of 34,000 joules per buffer over a spring travel of 100 mm. A preload force of 100 kN results in an operating force of 583 kN. The installation length over the center of the eye is 978.5 mm, leading to the use of the special ring type 19700.
